New report offers data-driven analysis on NWA’s AI Readiness versus Peer Metros

BENTONVILLE, Ark., Oct. 27, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Today Emeraude, Encore Economics and LINKTON published “Northwest Arkansas AI Capacity: Peer Metro Readiness and a Strategy for Leapfrog Opportunity.” Co-authored by Ross DeVol and Gaurav Chopra, the report provides data-driven comparisons of how Northwest Arkansas (Fayetteville-Springdale-Rogers, AR Metropolitan Statistical Area) is positioned in artificial intelligence (AI) capacity relative to peer “College Town” metros and proposes a ten-point leapfrog strategy to strengthen AI talent, innovation and adoption.

Northwest Arkansas ranks seventh among its selected peers and places 102nd nationally. Austin is first, followed by Madison and Raleigh, respectively, at second and third. One of Northwest Arkansas’ strongest areas is AI patents, where it ranks third among the selected peer metros, behind Raleigh and Austin. Within AI adoption metrics, the region performs best in firm data readiness, tying for fourth with Raleigh. Areas needing improvement include AI startup and venture capital activity. Northwest Arkansas has 12 AI startups, tied with Des Moines for the lowest count among the selected peers.

“NWA can commence a series of policy and program initiatives to enhance its position,” said Ross DeVol, Founder of Encore Economics and co-author. “Our ten-point plan incorporates recommendations on developing new AI talent, expanding AI innovation, and accelerating AI adoption.” DeVol added that “NWA should convene an AI Steering Committee to develop a strategic plan and coordinate implementation. The AI Steering Committee should be an evangelist for why it is critical for Northwest Arkansas to augment investments in AI and its adoption.”

“Northwest Arkansas should establish an applied-AI initiative that combines research with the capacity to deploy and maintain useful systems,” said co-author Gaurav Chopra, founder and CEO of LINKTON. Chopra continued, “a Bentonville-based implementation team could work through a host institution and partnership agreements with universities, employers and community organizations. The goal should be able to help smaller employers and communities turn AI into practical improvements through training, technical support, and measurable results.”

“NWA has a leapfrog opportunity to build a distinctive AI economy around its strengths in commerce, logistics, food systems, and health,” stated Jim Smith, Chairman, Emeraude. Smith added that “a regional strategy should combine carefully interpreted peer comparisons.
